PaxGenBio, a molecular diagnostics company, announced on the December 2nd that its COVID-19 molecular diagnostics kit, 'PaxView® SARS-CoV-2 real-time RT-PCR Kit' detects the Omicron variant of COVID-19. 

An official from PaxGenBio said, " in silico analysis of the Omicron variant sequence revealed that, the amplified regions by the PaxView kit does not include mutated regions of the Omicron variant, indicating that the PaxView® Kit amplifying the RdRp and N gene of COVID-19 virus provides a diagnostic test for the detection of COVID-19 regardless of the Omicron variant." 

The Omicron variant has been reported to have 32 mutations, more than twice the Delta variant. In particular, the Omicron variant has been identified as carrying mutations that have the potential to evade the natural immunity acquired from the previous infection and immune responses generated by vaccination. 

PaxGenBio is developing a diagnostic kit that differentiates between the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 virus) and its Omicron variant. A certification for the product is also being prepared.

팍스젠바이오 관계자는 "내부적으로 진행한 오미크론 변이 바이러스의 인실리코(in silico) 분석 결과 오미크론의 변이된 영역과 팍스젠바이오의 코로나19 분자진단 제품이 표적하는 영역이 일치하지 않았다"며 "이는 'PaxView® SARS-CoV-2 real-time RT-PCR Kit'(RdRp, N gene 타겟)가 오미크론의 변이와는 상관없이 진단 검사를 할 수 있다는 것을 의미한다"고 말했다.

업체에 따르면 오미크론은 델타 변이의 2배가 넘는 32개의 돌연변이를 보유했다. 특히 이전의 감염으로 획득한 자연 면역과 백신 접종으로 생선된 면역 반응을 회피할 가능성을 지닌 돌연변이를 갖고 있는 것으로 확인됐다.

팍스젠바이오는 기존 코로나19 바이러스와 오미크론 변이 바이러스를 감별할 수 있는 진단키트를 개발하고 있다. 해당 제품에 대한 인허가도 준비 중이다.
